Crafting with Dyed Materials adding joy to your work.
Examples of how you can use natures palette in you own crafting.
Craft
Once you have been playing with natural dyeing, you will come up with a hundred and one ways to use this process in your art and craft projects. Of course the uses of natural dyeing are limitless, but I thought I would show you a few examples of what I have made with my naturally dyed products.
As I have been making my own hand dyed felt during the experimental process, I thought I would start by showing you a few projects I have made with felt. The majority of these felts are from experiments already listed on these pages, though there will be a few hints on some that are still to come!
Teddy
This small teddy bear was made from my own hand made, naturally dyed merino felt. The original roving was first dyed with Ground Coffee before being wet felted.
The pattern for this teddy came from the Lisa Pay, Pay it Forward, youtube channel. This is a great source for free patterns and tutorials and is well worth a visit if you enjoy making soft sculpture. This was the Jointed Teddy tutorial made at 50%.
Eliza DoLittle
Eliza was based on another Lisa Pay free tutorial. I had started making the mouse in the same style as Lisa Pays, but while working, the mouse became quite instant that she wanted to be Eliza Do Little. So the hat, scarf, coat and apron had to be added.
All of the pieces of fabric here have been handmade and dyed by me, except for the cotton material used for the body as shown under the apron.
The base material of her body and skirt is a miniature print based on William Morris’s Spring Thicket theme. It can be purchased as a download that you can print onto fabric in three different scales. This is a great way to get fabric with small prints for small projects. https://www.etsy.com/shop/CraftingYourHome
The dyes used for the felt are as follows:
The scarf was made from roving that was naturally dyed with Red Onions (Post to come). It was then hand spun on with a drop spindle and crocheted with spider stitch.
The Apron is cotton material dyed with Tea.
All up I was quite happy with the way Eliza turned out. It was a great feeling to know I had dyed and made the materials myself. I hope this encourages you to experiment with your natural dyes in your own art and crafts projects. 🙂
